The multi grade sand filter (MGF) functions to remove all physical impurities in a graded manner through voids of the filtering media.
Removal of physical impurities of raw water, such as dirt, dust, suspended solids, all visible particles, etc., from Multi Grade Filter up to 50 micron.
Multi grade sand filter is a depth filter that makes use of coarse and fine media blended in a fixed proportion. This arrangement manufactures a filter bed with suitable pore dimensions to retain small to large suspended particles. In comparison to conventional filters, this filter performs at a substantially higher specific flow rate.
A multi grade filter has multiple layers of filter media that consists of white sand, fine sand, graded sand, activated carbon and pebbles layers; through which raw water is passed and suspended particles are retained. The activated carbon adsorbs onto its surface free chlorine, color, odor and organic compounds. In the filtration cycle, dirt and suspended particles from the water are retained in the filter bed, also accumulated within it.
As the filtration process progresses, filter media is added into retained particles, which results in a continuous increase of pressure drop across the filter. The filter is shut down for cleaning once a predetermined pressure drop level is achieved.
A backwash system cleans the filter media. After backwashing process, raw water is used for rinsing filter. As the required water quality is achieved, the filter is put back into service. Backwashing can be done with raw water as well as filtered water, depending on the filtered water quality needed.
